Dear Canadian Troops, I am a Grade 11 student from John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver. Over this past school year, my English class has been analyzing and exploring various texts relating to the service you are doing for Canada. As an immigrant, I sincerely appreciate you. Because of you and the work you do, my family and I have been able to live a richer and more fulfilling life here in Canada. Before my English class, I never wondered who was responsible for keeping this country safe. I just assumed that all Canadians were pacifists. But after the multiple texts that we have been studying, I now wonder why I never took one minute to sit back and fully digest why my parents wanted to come here. My parents picked Canada because of how happy and content life seemed here. Therefore, I would like to give you my sincere thanks for all the conflict you deal with everyday, the indifference society and maybe even your own loved ones show towards you and the work you do, as well as the huge commitment you have to our country. Millions of Canadian citizens live in freedom and safety, without fear of anything going awry, because of your courage and altruism. After reading this message, I hope that I have put a smile on your face or a tear on your cheek. I hope that I was able to remind you that your work is not in vain and that you are making a difference in this world. God bless you, and thank you for your service.

Meira - 17/12/2021
Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

I am Meira, a grade 11 student at John Oliver Secondary. In my English 11 class, I have read and studied a variety of texts that has helped me understand a bit of what people involved in a war have to go through which lead to me write this letter. First, I want to say I am so sorry for all the pain that was endured, I wish things had been easier. I will always be incredibly grateful for the ones who fought and sacrificed so much for the future generations of Canada. It makes me sick to think of the way they were treated afterwards, they deserved so, so much more then they were given. From a young age, I was taught the bravery, strength and power that soldiers had and that because of them, I was free to learn and play. I have my rights and freedom to be able to choose my own clothes, I can speak my opinions and for all this and more, I want to say thank you. I thank you for giving me the confidence that my children will grow up safe and be free to express themselves. And although some of Canada's heroes are laid to rest, I will never forget what they have given me and the future of Canada.

Dear Canadian Soldiers,I am currently in 11th grade studying at John Oliver Secondary. Currently, my English 11 class have dove into the topic of war and its important and hardships. After being exposed to a whole unfamiliar perspective, I am now more educated about the lives you soldiers had to endure for the sake of our nation’s safety, and so for that, I thank you and salute you. I want to give my sincere thank you to each one of you for willingly sacrificing yourselves to protect us and to give us a better future, even if it means you will not get any. It must have been challenging to leave your loved ones and seeing friends get killed in the battlefield, it must have hard how you had to strengthen your body, both physically and mentally so you can save our nation, and so I want to give you gratitude for all the sacrifices. No words can compare how grateful I am for all the things you did for all of us just to keep our home safe. I admire your courage, bravery, and passion for saving us and the future generation to come. I hope this message brought you comfort just like how your services did to us. May God always be with you and thank you once again for your services.

Matthieu - 16/12/2021
Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

To all our acting soldiers, My name is Matthieu, a student of John Oliver Secondary, and a representative of our gratitude towards all who work in the line of duty. As of late my class has delved into the effects on war on the soldiers who sacrifice themselves for our freedoms, and how those returning is affected not only physically but psychologically as well, and how such a thing must be brought to light more than it has now. It was with these sessions that I take my freedoms less for granted and show a reinforced gratitude towards those who currently serve and those who have fallen to preserve our rights and freedoms for our nation. With these in mind, I want to thank you all for the work and sacrifices you put into for our nation, and that your work has not gone unnoticed, and when you may think your stresses are getting to you, remember that you have all our support behind you, and help will always be there. Sincerely, Matthieu

Dear, our brave Canadian soldiers who protect our country and fight for our peace. My name is Arash. I am a John Oliver student in grade 11, writing to you to show my gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices you have made to honor our country. I am so grateful for all our soldiers fighting for our freedom, our families, and our country. Mehak - 16/12/2021
Vancouver, British Columbia

My name is Mehak . I am in grade 11 a student at John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver, BC. I am writing this letter because I want to thank you for everything you have done for me. I study at John Oliver Secondary School, and we’ve been studying different type of texts regarding your work for our country. In our class discussion we have learned and talked about what you guys go through and how things are done and dealt with and how it affects you mentally and physically. Thank you for your dedication to our country. Thank you for putting your lives on the line to ensure my safety. For your sacrifice your hard work and long hours and time away from family is difficult. If it weren't for people like you, we wouldn't have the freedoms we have in our country. We also learned how there are things you can’t sometimes talk about or have someone to share your feelings with but yet you’re there fighting for our country trying to keep us safe.

Shazil - 16/12/2021
Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

Hello Soldiers of Canada. My name is Shazil, I am currently in grade 11 attending John Oliver Secondary School. I would like to acknowledge the Canadian soldiers who served in the Canadian military and risked their lives to help create a better future for Canada. After reading and studying a variety of texts about responsibilities and consequences of war in my grade 11 English class, I understand the difficulties Canadian soldiers went through in order to make our country safe. I understand it was not easy for them, they had emotional and physical pain but they fought with all their strength. I want to say thank you to the true heroes of Canada for protecting our country, overcoming difficult obstacles, for making Canada a safe and peaceful place. Without the soldiers who fought for us, we wouldn't be able to do the things we do now. Thank you for protecting a place where I and many other people feel safe. We will always remember the true heroes of Canada.

Dear Member of the Cdn Armed Forces, This has been an especially challenging 2 yrs for all of us & I can only imagine how much more difficult it will be for you, away from your loved ones at Christmas during a pandemic. My older brother was in the RCAF from 1963 - 80s, stationed in Yellowknife, Egypt & Ottawa if I recall correctly. I was much younger & did not appreciate his service at the time. As I grow older, I have become more appreciative of those sacrifices made by the great men and women of our country. Thank you. May you have a blessed Christmas.
